Rethinking Everything: What ‘Think Again’ Taught Me About Hospitality Leadership
I just finished this eye-opening book called ‘Think Again: The Power of Knowing What You Don’t Know’ by Adam Grant.’ It got me thinking about how we approach leadership in hospitality.
You know how our industry is all about processes and control, right? Well, this book really challenges that mindset. It made me realize that maybe we’re being a bit too rigid in a world that’s constantly throwing curveballs at us.
Grant drops some real truth bombs in this book. Check these out:
👉🏼“Confirmation bias: seeing what we expect to see. The other is desirability bias: seeing what we want to see.”
👉🏼“Most of us take pride in our knowledge and expertise, and in staying true to our beliefs and opinions. That makes sense in a stable world, where we get rewarded for having conviction in our ideas. The problem is that we live in a rapidly changing world, where we need to spend as much time rethinking as we do thinking.”
👉🏼“We learn more from people who challenge our thought process than those who affirm our conclusions. Strong leaders engage their critics and make themselves stronger. Weak leaders silence their critics and make themselves weaker. This reaction isn’t limited to people in power. Although we might be on board with the principle, in practice we often miss out on the value of a challenge network.”
👉🏼“Many communicators try to make themselves look smart. Great listeners are more interested in making their audiences feel smart.”
I gotta say, this book is a game-changer. If you’re looking to up your leadership game, communicate better, or just wrap your head around the chaos of today’s world, give it a read. Trust me, it’s worth your time! In fact, I’ve ordered copies for my team.
What do you think? Has anyone else read this? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
